From the pilot phase to roll-out across the EGF Group.
As part of Valorsul’s Open Innovation 2024 programme, Greyparrot developed and tested an artificial intelligence solution applied to the monitoring and optimisation of waste sorting processes. The pilot project was implemented at Valorsul’s Packaging Sorting Centre through the installation of computer vision systems capable of identifying, classifying and quantifying waste in real time.
The technology enabled the creation of a new layer of operational intelligence on the sorting line, providing continuous information on the composition of waste, the quality of recovered materials, losses of recyclables and the overall performance of the facility. The data produced now supports operational decision-making, enabling the identification of opportunities for improvement and increasing process efficiency.
Throughout the project, customised dashboards were developed, along with a taxonomy tailored to Valorsul’s operational needs and analytical tools capable of transforming large volumes of data into useful information for facility management. The results demonstrated the potential of artificial intelligence to strengthen operational control, accelerate the digitalisation of waste treatment operations and providing information to improve material recovery.
The pilot was successfully completed, demonstrating the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance visibility of sorting processes, support faster and more informed operational decisions, and contribute to more efficient resource management. In addition to the operational benefits, the project enabled a deeper understanding of the waste processed and created a highly valuable information base for the continuous improvement of the facility.
The results achieved have strengthened Valorsul’s confidence in the technology and led to the decision to continue investing in this solution, building on the work begun as part of the Open Innovation initiative. This journey demonstrates how a collaboration between a tech start-up and a waste management operator can evolve from a pilot phase into a tool with recognised operational value.
More than just a technological demonstration, this initiative highlighted the potential of combining artificial intelligence with waste management to accelerate the sector’s digital transformation and promote more efficient, sustainable and data-driven operations.
